Terra Nova Take Two

Well, it would be unfair to judge the series by a single 2 hour episode, so we watched another episode last night.

There was no improvement in the writing or characters to be noticed :(
Issues were many and diverse.

1. Ineffectual father figure once again proved incompetent at daily life, being incapable of fixing a meal for his children and being unable to prepare them for bed, getting them bated and tucked in, having to wait instead for his uber competent wife to get home from a long day at work to do these simple chores that were beyond his abilities.

2. We have the wussy disarmed citizen pioneers unable to protect themselves from a flock of bird like creatures that turn nasty...seeing as no one has even a shotgun for protection.

3. We had the Econut Scientist pointing out that in nature animals never attack unless provoked and implying that the people who were going about their lives had in some way brought on the attacks from the bird like creatures.

4. Once again we see the Children being far more competent and skilled than the trained military personnel. The Military person is quickly knocked unconcious by one of the birdlike creatures leaving the children to save his bacon and the day by expertly handling the situation and even equipping and utilizing his weapon more capably and ably than the trained soldier could.

5, Humans once again turned out to be at fault and to blame as they had built their settlement on the bird things spawning grounds. The colony being unable to fend off flocks of birds turn to the econut scientist who in a matter of hours whips up 50 gallons/liters of the bird things pheromones which is used to lure the birds somewhere else to mate.

6. We find a crippled legless man pandering his wares on the street of the commune where all ones basic needs are provided free of charge to learn that there is in fact a currency in use after all and somehow he has accumulated quite stock pile of items to sell.

It is quite clear that the writing staff and creators have zero knowledge about real world pioneering, wilderness, animals or colonizing a wilderness. We see Hollywood emasculation of the men and the lionization of the women and children. This colony deserves to fail and fail big time.

Note, I am not saying Women cannot be uber capable, I actually know someone who reminds me of Friday in the Heinlein Novel of the same name. The sad thing about this is that Hollywood can't seem to write strong female characters without doing so at the expense of the males. Compare this show to Firefly or StarGate SG1 and you see it is a very sad attempt at an exciting show.
